oh man, yes. I was so happy and surprised when this came on in the end. It's so lovely and haunting, it was, just, perfection...

I liked that song a lot when I first heard it. Then I started thinking, hmmn, icelandic ENya. Then I heard that all the hot young celebs were into SIgur Ros. SO that tainted it a bt for me.
BUt our Raleigh would say I should not let that influence my likiing the song, right Raleigh? Anyway, i sang it in the shower today and it is pretty fun, and gratifying for the singer, so I guess i like it again. theres never any time to have too much self-doubt anyway-- Wes Anderson |

"BUt our Raleigh would say I should not let that influence my likiing the song, right Raleigh?"
If there is any Enya influence it's in passing. Perhaps they found a way to extract the part of her music that isn't utter shit? I mean, even John Tesh plays piano, but that doesn't taint the instrument does it? "Well I want to die." - Raleigh St Clair

It's the huge reverb, slow-moving harmonies and repetitions that remind me of ENya. I didn't necessarily mean to be perjorative there
I think the melody is kind of like a plainchant which is why it is gratifying to sing and also why I like it. If you remove the metre and just sing the notes you will se what I mean. I think actually it is like a lot of mimalism which is going on in classical music, too. There, I do like it! And yeah, it was on my MP3 players these last 6 months, before I knoew it would be in TLA. theres never any time to have too much self-doubt anyway-- Wes Anderson |

I just snuck out and watched the movie again by myself. I haven't been much up in the TLA threads, maybe I need to let it sink in for a while longer before I start picking away at it, but I had to take a moment to say (again) how much I LOVE this scene. I really did tear up a bit this time, even though there were some jackasses a couple rows back laughing (they laughed at the post helicopter crash/Ned dying part too, and I thought I was going to vomit with rage.)
It's just so damn beautiful. For some people maybe, they think the film is too disorganized, or dragging, or what have you. But any film that can create such a downright lovely, moving moment, such emotion in the midst of so much madness...it just makes it all, completely, worthwhile to me (drawing on a quote from Wes I read in some other thread.) Sigh...that felt good well, uh...we fucking stole it man |

God, you know when I first watched the movie that song took me out of it, because I hate Sigur Ros.
But I'm big enough to admit when I'm wrong. That song fits the scene quite nicely. I even find myself singing along to it when I watch the end now. My very favorite part of that scene is kind of hokey. But I do so dearly love when Ned points off to the horizon and then Jane tells Steve to do it too. The only reason it seems hokey to me is because it's slightly out of character for Jane. She and Steve didn't really bond until they both lost Ned. But it's the "I've had a rough year, Dad" moment for me. Tears me up every time. I still don't like Sigur Ros though. Pretentious art-school douches. Mom... Dad... I love you. Please don't sell me to Paris Hilton! |

I love that scene too! And then it shows the shadow on the flag...see, my only real exposure to Sigur Ros was many years ago when my friend gave me their CD for my birthday. I'd never really read anything about them, nor have I since. I just thought it was this really cool, atmospheric, often REAL creepy music.
But they probably are douches. No, I don't wanna think about it... well, uh...we fucking stole it man |

Uh huh! Absolutely!
Steve: This one was my son. (shadow points at octopus) Somehow the fact that he adds "also our equity partner" makes it even better for me. I don't know if it was supposed to be a joke or not. It just seems so matter-of-fact. Mom... Dad... I love you. Please don't sell me to Paris Hilton! |

i don't understand where people get the description of Sigur Ros' style as being creepy? i think of it more like drowning in a beautiful repetitive ocean of depression. talented ass men, if only i could write like them.

oh, and forgot to mention... yah, some people laughed at the most touching parts on my first watching, it's borderline umbearable. you just think, "do you even know what the director is going for right here?" obviously not and then it spoils it for you, because you were thinking more about that douchebag then the scene as a whole. i guess considering the object of attention is a giant CGI shark makes it funny, but i thought that just made it even more beautiful, cause it wasn't done before.

Hey, I LOVE Sigur Ros, but they still creep me out sometimes. Not in a bad way, no, not at all.
But I just remember this one time, and this was back when I first got Agaetis Byurjun and I'd never heard them before, several years ago. I went to take a bath, lit some candles, the whole works, and decided to put Sigur Ros on. I'd only listened to the whole CD maybe a couple times, and as I was lying in the bath I kept hearing these strange, otherworldly, moany-ghosty sounds, and I couldn't figure out what it was, and it was really freaking me out...until I realized it was coming from the CD player. Now, bear in mind, this was still during my young, impressionable days before I developed any real concept of taste...but still, in darkened rooms, at night, the Ros can still creep me out, just a wee, wee bit. well, uh...we fucking stole it man |

This is the english translation of the lyrics:
Staring Elf Blue Night Over The Sky Blue Night Over Me Dis-Appeared Out Of The Window Me With Hands Hidden Under My Cheek I Think About My Day Today And Yesterday I Put On My Blue Nighties Go Straight To Bed I Pull The Soft Covers Over Close My Eyes I Hide My Head Under The Covers A Little Elf Stares At Me Runs Towards Me But Doesnt Move From Place - Himself A Staring Elf I Open My Eyes Take The Crusts Out Stretch Myself And Check (If I Havent) Returned Again And Everything Is Okay Still There Is Something Missing Like All The Walls They sing a lot of their songs in a sort of variation of Icelandic that they make up themselves, called Hopelandic (meaning it couldn't really be translated by anyone, except possibly the band), but apparently most of the songs on Agaetis Byrjun are in honest to god Icelandic. So there ya go. Anyways, I thought it was kinda cool... well, uh...we fucking stole it man |

I've been listening to the song all day on repeat, and I keep remembering the scene from the movie each time, and for some reason, it affects me more and more each time. I was walking to class earlier, and I had the song stuck in my head, so I started thinking about the scene, and I wanted to just sit down on the snow, think about the scene, and feel that odd combination of sadness and absolute joy that I experienced when I saw the movie.
I'm listening to the song as I type this, and I've never felt more relaxed. Thanks, Sigur Ros -- for the song. Thanks, Wes Anderson -- for giving it to me in such a beautiful and emotional scene in a wonderful movie. |
